Movies, Music, Crypto: The Rise of Pop Culture Trading Cards. Picturing a pile of various pop culture trading cards.

Last Updated On: April 24th, 2025

We are currently in an era where fandom, nostalgia, and investment are fueling the passion for collecting and the value of pop culture trading cards.

The hobby is no longer just centered around rookie cards and player performance; collectors are chasing hits from non-sports trading card products of the past and present. Pop culture trading cards are experiencing a major resurgence, with the industry pushing boundaries to produce highly sought-after cards that appeal to fans of every genre.

Let’s explore some of the key players making waves in the pop culture trading card scene and break down the different corners of pop culture they’re tapping into.

Overview: Pop Culture Cards

Pop Culture trading cards are collectible cards that specifically focus on characters and themes of pop culture. This can include various topics like movies, television shows, comic books, musicians, video games, and many more. Pop culture cards featuring autographs or relics are not a new concept in the industry and have been around since the late ’80s. Companies like Leaf have had a large presence in the pop-culture trading card space over the last two decades, producing popular sets such as “Pop Century” that feature premium autograph and relic cards of celebrities.

However, one of my biggest issues with Leaf’s pop culture cards is that they rarely include any IPs (intellectual property), logos, or iconic images associated with the celebrity. Many of the photos used generally capture the subject at a red carpet or press-related event, and in my opinion, this makes the cards look underwhelming (similar to unlicensed baseball cards that collectors normally shun).

But since the pandemic, the surge in popularity of pop-culture-driven autographs and relics has led to an increase in new releases from both established and emerging industry competitors.

Movies & Television Trading Cards

Movies and Television are arguably the most popular and longstanding sectors of pop culture card collecting. The content boom in showbiz has opened the door for a wave of movies and shows to be captured on trading cards. As fanbases for trending titles grow fast, the demand for premium trading cards that capture these moments in pop culture history continues to rise.

Topps Pop Culture Cards

While Topps is best known for its sports cards, the company has been a major player in the pop culture trading card world for over half a century, producing sets for numerous movies and television shows. Its iconic partnership with the Star Wars franchise began in 1977 and continues to this day.

In 2006, Topps revived Allen & Ginter, reintroducing the 19th-century set that originally blended athletes and pop culture figures into one collectible lineup. The baseball-focused set includes many chase cards, including pop culture autographs, DNA relics, and cut signatures.

Following the huge influx of collectibles interest in 2020, Topps launched its premium pop culture trading card brand, Zerocool. Notable set releases featuring autographs or rare parallels include Stranger Things, Jackass, Dune, and Clerks 3.

At the start of 2025, Topps officially claimed global trading card rights for Disney, Pixar, and most importantly, Marvel. The popularity of Marvel card collecting has increased since the 1990s, and the rise of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) has turned it into one of the leading properties in pop culture trading cards. With Upper Deck previously holding the license, Topps is now carrying the torch by providing high quality Marvel cards through popular brands like Topps Chrome and Finest.

The Fanatics-owned company also recently debuted Topps Disney Genesis, one of the first card sets to spotlight characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Some of the top chases include Spider-Man, Buzz Lightyear, Darth Vader, and, of course, Mickey Mouse. Each box has only one pack that includes five cards, but every card is numbered to /99 or lower. As of this writing, each Disney Genesis 1/1 black parallel card that surfaced online has sold for no less than $3,000.

Now that Disney’s magic and popular IPs like Marvel are teaming up with Topps for the foreseeable future, it could transform the way we collect and value pop culture trading cards.

Cryptozoic Entertainment Cards

Cryptozoic Entertainment is a pop culture collectibles company that produces many licensed tabletop games and trading cards. Since 2010, Cryptozoic has created several movie and television trading card sets that feature actor autographs and authentic wardrobe relics.

Some famous IPs include DC, The Walking Dead, and my personal favorite, Breaking Bad. This Yellow Hazmat relic card featuring Bryan Cranston as Walter White from the 2014 Breaking Bad set is a standout example of the unique and exciting pop culture cards being produced. A card that was once selling for under $100 from 2014 to 2022 has seen recent sales over $500.

The pop culture trading card company has continued to develop its portfolio of licensed IPs and chase cards. Cryptozoic recently debuted its new line of “Marquee” pop culture trading card sets that celebrate classic movies and use images pulled directly from the films. Marquee’s inaugural release honored the 40th anniversary of the beloved holiday classic A Christmas Story, featuring actor autographs, sketch cards, and serial-numbered variants. If I had to choose the most sought-after card of the entire set, it would have to be the Peter Billingsley as Ralphie 1/1 autograph card inscribed “I want a Red Ryder!”

Continuing with the holiday movie-themed trading cards, Chevy Chase released a limited edition Christmas Vacation 35th Anniversary Box Set. It included signed cards of the Griswold family and cards featuring relics personally used by the SNL legend.

Music & Other Pop Culture Cards

Music and broader pop culture icons have become increasingly prominent in the trading card space. They’ve carved out a fast-growing niche of fans, many coming from the collecting world of sneakers, lifestyle apparel, and gaming. The rising value of rare and highly desired cards featuring musicians and figures continues to drive the demand for newly released pop culture sets with cultural significance.

GAS Trading cards

GAS Trading Cards is a premium collectibles company that focuses on producing pop culture cards of social relevance. Founded in 2020, GAS works in direct collaboration with brands, artists, and their estates to create official trading cards that celebrate music, culture, and entertainment.

I must say, they’ve done a fantastic job at recruiting top-tier celebrities from various art forms to make incredible pop culture cards, with some drops including rare, autographed cards. Superstars like Eminem, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Snoop Dogg have limited-edition GAS autographed cards that aren’t cheap to obtain on the secondary market. Marshall Mathers signed cards celebrating his 12th studio album, The Death of Slim Shady, have numerous sales eclipsing $4,000. Of the 41 GAS Slim Shady autographed cards produced, only nine have been graded by PSA, with just two receiving a gem mint grade.

As far as distribution goes, GAS does not offer its cards through traditional sealed packs or boxes, but releases bundled sets that may include base cards, foil cards, or autograph editions, depending on the product. GAS pop culture cards are mainly released on the company’s website, but are also sold on Complex, a major pop culture media platform focused on music and style.

Cardsmiths

Cardsmiths is another recent addition to the pop culture trading card market, creating thoughtfully designed sets featuring famous entertainment figures, gaming titles, and cryptocurrency themes.

Some of the most popular IPs collaborating with Cardsmiths to produce limited sets include Street Fighter, Bob Ross, and Golden Girls. The Street Fighter Series 1 Ryu Onyx Refractor 1/1 sold at auction on eBay for a whopping $15,099, becoming the highest-selling Cardsmiths pop culture trading card of all time (for now).

Since the company started producing collectibles in 2022, I’d argue that Cardsmiths most popular sets are found in its Currency Series, trading cards that explore the evolution of money. From ancient bartering systems to modern cryptocurrencies, each release depicts influential artifacts and icons that have shaped civilization and the modern economy. Aside from limited edition parallels offered, the series’ biggest chases are redemption cards for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Dogecoin.

Cardsmiths’ pop culture trading cards are primarily sold on their website — where they even accept cryptocurrency — but you can also find them at GameStop.

The Bottom Line: Pop Culture Cards Are Heating Up

Although pop culture trading cards have been part of the hobby since the beginning, we are in a new phase of collecting where the emphasis has shifted from old-school base card set releases to rare, high-value hits.

Moving forward, I’d love to see more creative use of iconic IPs and greater celebrity involvement in pop culture trading cards, whether it’s through autographs, memorabilia cards, or unique fan experiences. The world of content and pop culture is bigger than it’s ever been, leaving endless opportunities for trading card companies to collaborate with famous brands, studios, franchises, and celebrities.

As the industry continues to introduce innovative chase cards in genres and themes that aren’t being covered, I’m hopeful that pop culture trading cards will one day rival the long-established sports card collecting community in popularity and value.
