Since 2020, the trading card hobby has seen an explosion of art-focused sports and pop culture cards flood the markets. From low-end to high-end releases, top manufacturers like Topps and Panini have collaborated with artists to create custom trading cards for various sports and celebrities. However, the popularity and high resale values of many of these cards didn’t last because of overprinting and shifting collector interests.
But emerging companies like PiggyBanx are bringing a new imagination to card designs, print runs, and moving beyond the traditional photos and themes typically used in the industry. With the recent surge in demand and resale prices of PiggyBanx art cards, have they solidified their place in the hobby, or are they merely a passing fad?

What are PiggyBanx Art Cards?
PiggyBanx is a Southern California brand founded in 2022 to produce premium, limited-edition designer art trading “cards” that truly stand out. However, don’t call them cards — according to the PiggyBanx website, their collectibles are strictly artwork.
The legality in terms of PiggyBanx’s use of well-known IPs is sort of in a grey area, but some of the popular trademarks featured on cards include Star Wars, Marvel, DC, The Simpsons, and many more. That said, PiggyBanx does a remarkable job at combining elements of sports, film, music, pop culture, and card collecting into their designs.
One-of-one art trading cards and limited print runs have been a huge benefit for PiggyBanx’s increase in popularity, with each drop offering varying levels of rarity identified by different color labels and symbols on the slab. The back of each label also includes the variation and serial number of the artwork.
Another cool feature is their elite level of presentation, from the luxurious case to the double-encased slab accompanied by a COA signed by PiggyBanx. I also like how you can remove the slab from the encased holder, so it has the same feel as a traditional graded sports card. Buyers even receive a pair of PiggyBanx-branded white gloves for those who want to handle their unboxing with extra care.

Tony Soprano x Downtown Inspired Card
As a card collector born and raised in Jersey, The Sopranos is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. So when I noticed PiggyBanx made a special card featuring one of the baddest mob bosses in television history, I had to put it on my “cards to own” wish list.
The theme and design of the Sopranos PiggyBanx card pay homage to one of Panini’s most popular short-printed cards: The Downtown insert. Downtowns are widely known for featuring famous landmarks, historical imagery, and cultural elements related to the specific city or region of the player’s team. In the case of Tony Soprano and PiggyBanx’s Downtown inspired art card, the background depicts famous places from the show, including the Sopranos’ home and Satriale’s Pork Store, with Tony pictured in front.
The Sopranos card has seen some solid price gains since being released last year, with 2025 sales ranging between $1,500 and $3,000.

All-Time Scoring Leaders Caitlin Clark, Lebron James, Diana Taurasi
This PiggyBanx basketball crossover highlights the scoring legacies of superstars Caitlin Clark, Lebron James, and Diana Taurasi on the same card. It was created to celebrate the all-time scoring leaders from the NCAA, NBA, and WNBA. The horizontal look and triple player design is a tribute to the classic 1980 Topps set that contains the iconic Magic Johnson/Larry Bird scoring leaders rookie card.
According to Card Ladder, there have been fewer than 10 sales of the scoring leaders card since its 2024 release, with recent sales around $1,500.
How Can I Purchase New Releases?
Public releases of PiggyBanx collectibles are first announced exclusively on their Instagram account. Once the drop announcement is posted, customers interested in purchasing are directed to a drop site link where they have a 30-minute window to fill out a purchase form. If you are lucky enough to be selected, you’ll receive an email to complete the purchase with a limit of one purchase per collector/household.
When PiggyBanx cards were first introduced to the hobby, most releases were priced under $500. However, as their popularity has grown in recent years, prices have risen. At the time of writing, new card drops are priced at $750, but this can vary based on the release’s rarity or demand.
Due to the limited supply available for purchase with each release, collectors who missed out on drops have resorted to purchasing on aftermarket sites like eBay or at trade shows.
When looking for PiggyBanx cards on eBay or other online marketplaces, it’s important to remember that searches should include PiggyBanx, and Piggy Banx (two words) to ensure optimal search results.
Do PiggyBanx Cards Have Staying Power?
When it comes to PiggyBanx’s staying power, I think it comes down to two big questions. Can they continue creating innovative card designs and drops that help them stand out from the rest? Are early adopters building a foundation of passionate PiggyBanx collectors who promote the brand?
Since bursting onto the scene in 2022, the increased demand for PiggyBanx art cards across all themes has contributed to more releases and their impressive growth on Instagram.
But just because something is trending now doesn’t mean it’ll stay trending forever. Many art-related trading cards, like Topps Project 2020, haven’t appreciated well post-release because of high print runs and oversaturated markets. For example, Mike Trout’s Topps Project 2020 #4 Ermsy card (pop 2,911) was one of the project’s hottest cards upon release, reselling on the secondary market for as high as $2,000. Fast forward to today, recent sales have plummeted below $200 with no signs of recovery. Although the same could be said about many Mike Trout cards losing value these days.
However, I’ll admit that PiggyBanx seems to have an edge over releases like Topps Project 2020 because of its strategic use of well-known IPs, premium quality, and most importantly, focus on rarity. Topps Project 2020 print runs for each release were determined by the number of orders placed through the Topps website during a 48-hour window (akin to Topps Now). This is a major difference compared to PiggyBanx, whose drops typically have a print run of less than 50 art cards.
The high-end appeal and custom designs have the potential to attract collectors beyond traditional sports cards and art. But the flipside is that extremely limited availability and steep price tags can prevent average collectors from buying, which could narrow its fanbase.
Only time will tell if PiggyBanx cards can balance their premium artwork with broader access to secure a lasting legacy in the hobby. As Topps Project 2020 has showed, sacrificing rarity for mass production can wreak havoc on card prices and destroy long-term collector demand.

Summary
I won’t call myself an art cards guru, but I believe PiggyBanx fills a void in the hobby and pushes creativity with limited edition sports and pop culture crossover cards. Other art related releases in recent years have felt ordinary, and PiggyBanx’s designs are clearly superior to the competition.
If PiggyBanx continues doing limited releases and tying card designs to unique events or collaborations, the rarity and brand appeal could keep resale values high. But if the market is one day flooded with them and the exclusivity is gone, over-saturation may be the downfall of their staying power, similar to Topps Project 2020 cards.
